Work At Home

Working at Home is a privilege enjoyed by more and more people these days, thanks largely to the internet. Thousands of people who even have a “regular” job are able to work at it from home, at least for a few days each week, using their laptop for their office, what more do you need? It’s a particularly appealing prospect on those cold, dark winter mornings when you have to wrap up in 5 layers just to go out and de-ice the car, never mind trying to start it, oh yes, there’s something to be said for sitting in your pyjamas, fluffy slippers and robe with a steaming coffee, ready to start your days work.

Work At Home Opportunities

But what about those people who don’t have the luxury of a regular paycheck coming through the door, but still want (or need) to earn some cash from home, either as a little bit extra, or  to coincide with looking after the family for example. What are their options? Just type in the words “work at home” into a google search and you’ll have instant access to more than 2 billion results, (I think it’s billion, I lost count of the zero’s) in less than a tenth of a second, but you have to be a little more savvy than to fall for many of those “opportunities”, so before you believe the hype of becoming an overnight millionaire and place your order for the latest Ferrari, let’s look at some of the more realistic home working opportunities available.

  • Work at Home with Surveys – there are people who do make a very handy second income simply by filling in online surveys. There are loads of websites where you can register, fill in your details and wait for the surveys to land in your in-box so it’s definitely one option.
  • Work at Home with Auction Sites – how about selling stuff on auction sites? Ebay immediately springs to mind, and there ebay sellers out there with feedback of tens of thousands, so how much stuff have they been selling. Start off with a few unwanted items from home, or if you have a particular interest and knowledge in a particular field (valuable coins/antique spoons/old books) then why not put your experience to good use and specialize?
  • Work at Home selling Door to Door – this isn’t really working at home, but it’s certainly working from home isn’ t it? Selling products like Avon or other cosmetics door to door has been popular (particularly with Mums) for decades, it’s definitely worth considering to make a little extra cash, and if you’re really good at it you can make a tidy sum each campaign.
  • Work at Home House Sitting – okay, now you won’t be strictly working from your own home, but house sitters are in a bit of a win-win situation. You’re simply paid to live in someones house whilst they are away. Many people are very worried about leaving their houses empty these days, so for security purposes (and to feed the cat and walk the dog) they find having someone house sit whilst they are away gives them peace of mind. You might even find that you’re living in the lap of luxury for a week or two.
  • Work at Home Freelancing – freelancing is becoming very popular these days, it’s a brilliant way to connect businesses (particularly smaller ones) who have a particular need with a specialist who can fulfil that need. Maybe you have some talents which other people are willing to pay for. There are a growing number of freelance sites which will put together “workers” and “employers” and you might be surprised at what you can find. You won’t know until you look. Website building, copy writing, data entry – there really are loads of different opportunities available.

Working At Home – The Reality

Just like anything else, if you work at home and want to be successful, you have to “work” at home. It’s no good putting the TV on after half an hour to see your favorite daytime TV, then having your mates call in for coffee, because before you know it four hours have gone by and you’ve earned nothing. Treat it like a job and keep to regular hours as much as possible – although it does also offer, by its very nature, a certain amount of flexibility which is great.

Work at Home Scams

Unfortunately, the internet is absolutely loaded with unscrupulous scammers who are trying to lure your money away from you with the promise of making you rich with no effort at all. Don’t part with any cash to anybody unless you are absolutely 100% satisfied that it is the “real deal”. A quick online search generally does the trick – just put “name of company” followed by Scam? You’ll soon find out all about it.
